Singer Sewing Machine Company Statue

BACK IN the days when sewing-machine manufacturers were among the most powerful commercial figures in the land, directors liked to show off their company's worth by building ornate headquarters and showrooms - much in the way banks tend to do now.

Singer was no exception as this superb sculpture shows. It was part of the facade of the Singer building in Leicester. Unlike the Singer clock at Clydebank which was sold off for scrap, the sculpture was saved and is now in the Tronbridge Tile Museum where John Brown photographed it for this magazine.
